Acid reflux or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a common condition in the UK where acid leaks out from the stomach and into the oesophagus (gullet).

This causes a variety of symptoms such as:

  • Heartburn – burning sensation or discomfort in the chest.
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Pain when swallowing.
  • Difficulty swallowing.

Proton pump inhibitors (listed above) are prescribed to treat acid reflux. They inhibit acid secretion in the stomach by blocking the proton pump of the gastric parietal cell.
